All the latest news at Courchevel

Perfection, on the piste of Courchevel

As winter comes to an end, it's the perfect time to discover the many feedbacks from our customers. Let's head for the snowy peaks of Courchevel, to the Manali Lodge! Thank you all for this winter season.

Amie, vacationing at the Manali Lodge with her friends and family, gives us some wonderful feedback on her stay:

« Because of its ski-in ski-out location, the privacy offered by its luxurious suites and its reputation for offering an exemplary level of service, we chose the Manali Lodge in Courchevel, for our vacation. Our signature Kinabalu suite features five beautiful bedrooms and four stunning bathrooms with more than enough space to accommodate our group of 10 skiers. It’s on the top floor, affording us incredible views across the mountains, which of course are best enjoyed from the comfort of the private hot tub!

The living room of the Kinabalu Suite, in the Manali Lodge Courchevel.

Our perfect ski day begins at 8am in the beautiful living room where I discover several delicious breakfast dishes have been delivered by the Manali Lodge team. The children enjoy the fresh pastries before we head down to the ski shop to collect all of our equipment. You may not have considered the benefit of having an on-site ski shop; the convenience is incredible. The team at Gilbert Sports are experts in preparing and fitting our equipment, it’s ready and waiting for us and we hit the slopes at around 9.15am, which is record breaking time.

The ski-shop of the Manali Lodge, where you can rent your ski equipment directly in the hotel.

The dedicated and highly experienced Manali concierge team have prepared a ski itinerary in advance for us. He’s taken account of our ability levels and he knows we want to see as much of the ski area as possible this morning; conditions are perfect here in Courchevel and we’re excited to begin. At the front terrace we descend on our skis, taking the Ariondaz telecabine before heading towards Courchevel La Tania on the Folyères blue piste.
The snow-covered fir trees along the way feel like a true winter wonderland. The Alpine Resorts team planned our ski lift passes in advance for us, so we board the telecabine with ease, direction the famous Col de la Loze. At this breathtaking altitude - 2,304m - it’s possible to enjoy the view across the 3 Vallees and it’s easy to imagine the approach of the peloton as the col has host a stage finish of Le Tour de France. From here we take a fun combination of red and blue slopes to reach the Family Park, just above Courchevel 1850. Did we all dare to try the big air bag? Of course we did! Much fun was had and memories were certainly made.

The ski lift network in Courchevel is both fast and efficient. Before we know it, we’re at the highest point in Courchevel, the magnificent Saulire at 2740m. The descent on the Chanrossa side is both challenging and fun before we make our way back to Manali Lodge via the Piste des Indiens. It’s been an incredible morning and we’re delighted to discover a sun-drenched table waiting for us on the piste-side terrace at Bistrot Manali when we return. The ‘little skiers menu’ featuring Angus beef burger or trout fillet accompanied by pasta, vegetables or fries was the perfect refuel for the little ones in our ski group before the departed for an action-packed afternoon in the Club ESF, the meeting point for which is just next door to Manali Lodge.

The Club Piou Piou ESF, just down the path from the Manali Lodge hotel.

Personally, I don’t love to ski all day. I like a challenging, intensive morning ski but there’s so much more to a mountain resort than simply exploring the pistes; this is especially true when Manali Lodge is your base. With the children entertained by their wonderful instructors for the afternoon, we take the private Manali shuttle to explore the finest shopping Courchevel can offer; before returning to the sumptuous and elegant Spa Manali for an energetic massage with Gemology stones and a relaxing dip in the pool.

At around 4pm the children’s lessons conclude and we’re reunited by the fireplace in our Kinabalu suite for afternoon tea.
We still have some energy left to start the evening, so we head for Moriond Racing, a short cable car ride from Manali Lodge, under the guidance of Manon Scapula, site manager. At the Moriond Racing just a short cable car ride from Manali Lodge, we discover a 3km-long toboggan run that features hairpins, tunnels, switchbacks and more. The race track guarantees smiles all round and it absolutely delivers. We're having a wonderful time as a family.

All that remains to conclude this most perfect day on the pistes of Courchevel is a sublime dining experience at Gaïa. Gaïa is an Asian fusion restaurant within Manali Lodge and the menu is packed with sushi, tatami and yakitori delights accompanied by expertly prepared cocktails. Is there a better way to end a day in the mountains? I think not. »

Manali Lodge sits on the snow front in Courchevel Moriond and includes 16 individual 5* suites varying in size from six person to 11 person. We offer our guests a full range of hotel-style services, including a dedicated concierge team, swimming pool, private spa, private parking and more. Lunching on the terrace of your favorite mountain restaurant as the summer sun beats down. Jumping on a chairlift that's often buried in snow to experience the fresh mountain air. Summer in the mountains, and in particular Les 3 Vallées, is full of endless surprises. And let's not forget that during the summer season, Courchevel lift passes are absolutely free!

Episode 3 > The thrills are yours!

Are you tempted by the idea of getting away for a few days? Throughout this summer, let’s discover outdoor activities for your future mountain trips. Today, let’s focus on discovering the climbing and via ferrata spots in Courchevel.

Let's start at the beginning, the difference between climbing and via ferrata. Climbing can be practiced on any type of relief in the middle of the nature. The via ferrata, for its part, can be described as "climbing accessible to all" with an accessible itinerary along a rock face. In Courchevel, you will be able to climb on many paths, including our favourite in Moriond: the Vallée des Avals and its various technical routes. Sensations guaranteed!

1. Climbing itineraries

Courchevel is full of climbing routes, allowing you to evolve on its equipped and secure sites. Focus on the climbing itineraries, to try on your own or accompanied by a mountain guide:

  • Vallée des Avals (Moriond): rock climbing area (Biol canyon) with 12 routes of various lengths (Grande Val and Petite Val rock faces) and climbing across mountain ridges (Plassa).
  • La Saulire (1850): climbing routes of varying lengths over rocks close to the top of the cable car (beneath Le Panoramic restaurant).
  • Falaise Praméruel (altitude: 2000 metres): 8 sectors with 55 routes for both beginners and experienced climbers. The perfect way to cool off on a hot day - sun from 4pm to 7pm in the middle of summer.
  • Indoor climbingAquamotion -> this 11-metre high climbing wall offers a selection of routes, including some which are self-guided. A 3-metre high practice area and a kids fun climbing area (from age 6 or 20 kg+). Forum (1850) -> 13 metre-high climbing wall, which is open to all every day in July and August.

1. Via ferrata itineraries

The practice of the via ferrata is accessible to all generations, as long as you are a competent walker who is not afraid of heights. With its via ferrata routes for all levels, from beginners to advanced, you are sure to find what you are looking for in Courchevel! Follow the marked mountain routes to progress along rock faces and mastering the vertical world. Bring your equipment and follow the guide:

  • Panoramic : this short route is located beneath the Saulire cable car, perfect for beginners with its 250 metres of length.
  • Lac de la Rosière : if you want to discover this activity, go to the Lac de la Rosière for a via ferrata route with a breathtaking view. Taking 2h to complete with a 550 metre-long cable and, for the bravest, a 65 metre-long footbridge to cross.
  • Verdons : enjoy one of the highest via ferrata in France reaching an altitude of 2,739 metres with a length of 800 metres and 225 metres altitude difference. Climbing time: 3h and 45min to come back down.

If you would like to discover the mountain lakes in Courchevel, book your apartment or chalet HERE. Do not hesitate to contact us if you have any more questions.

Our favourite to meet up with the family: the lac de la Rosière, a treasure well hidden in the heart of the forest (Natura 2000-listed site) and one of the most beautiful natural sites in Courchevel. Here you can enjoy the coolness of the sparkling lake, picnics and barbecues or walks in the surrounding area for all levels up to the top of the Dent du Villard. The view is even more spectacular from the top, via hiking trails or from the via ferrata. Accessible by car from the centre of Courchevel Moriond (5 minutes) or by free shuttle bus, it is a wild change of scenery guaranteed at the foot of the Dent du Villard!

Spring Skiing in Courchevel

Spring skiing is always a pleasure; the sun is out, the skies are blue, the pistes are in prime condition and everyone’s in a good mood! Spring skiing in Courchevel is particularly special, since Courchevel is located in one of the world’s largest ski areas and there’s so much to do. Whether you own a home here or you’re just visiting for the week, spring offers a huge choice of things to do and enjoy, with family or friends. Here are just a few of our favourite things about spring skiing in Courchevel.

Spring skiing in Courchevel offers incredible exploring potential! Photo: Courchevel Tourisme

Hundreds of kilometres of pistes, just for you

One of the reasons spring skiing in Courchevel is so great is that the resorts of the Three Valleys have started to quieten down a bit. Even during the Easter holidays, you’re guaranteed to see less lift lines than you will during the Christmas or February half term holidays. That leaves you free to explore the Three Valleys at your leisure, plus it means the pistes stay in better condition throughout the day, so it’s a win, win.

You can ski up to 3230m in the Three Valleys, meaning the snow stays in great condition all spring. Photo: David Andre

Great Snow Conditions

With so much skiable area, starting at 600m and topping out at 3,230m, spring skiing in Courchevel means you’re pretty much guaranteed good snow conditions. While lower resorts might feel the effect of the spring sun, there are lots of opportunities to stay at nice and high in the Three Valleys and enjoy everything the mountains have to offer.

Bistrot Manali – piste-side luxury and quite possibly the best terrace in Courchevel! Bistrot Manali will be open for business next winter.

Wonderful Weather

If there was ever time to enjoy long lunches and leisurely late-afternoon cocktails on the terraces of Courchevel’s amazing mountain restaurants, it’s in the spring. Warm, sunny weather and longer evenings make spring skiing in Courchevel a total delight. And don’t forget about sunny après ski down in the resorts, or evening drinks on the balcony! If you’re not skiing, the warm spring weather is also great for exploring the resort and some of its hiking trails.

Spring in Courchevel is jam packed with fun events. There really is something for everyone! Photo: Courchevel Tourisme

Lots of Events

It’s not unreasonable to think that there’s not much going on at the end of the season in a ski resort, but in Courchevel it’s another story. There’s SO much to do Courchevel in the spring, from brand new end-of-season musical celebration, the Folie Douce Festival, to Courchevel Gaming Week. Then there’s the Three Valleys Enduro, a series of friendly amateur ski races throughout the Three Valleys, and the Festival des Jeux, a celebration of fun and games for families. Courchevel celebrates ten years of L’Art au Sommet

Courchevel puts on some truly spectacular events across the winter season, from World Cup ski races to international fireworks festivals. But perhaps one of the best, and one that can be viewed all winter long, is l’Art au Sommet, a spectacular outdoor art exhibition displayed throughout the resort and across the pistes.

L’Art au Sommet is completely free and a great way to get acquainted with Courchevel, adding a little culture and metropolitan atmosphere to a traditional Alpine setting. Whether you’re exploring the pistes or taking a walk through Courchevel 1850, it’s fantastic to come across one of these visually impressive sculptures in the middle of the mountains.

One of Richard Orlinski’s larger than life creations at the top of the Suisses chairlift. Photo: Courchevel Tourisme

This winter is a particularly special Art au Sommet, as the event is celebrating its tenth birthday. At its conception, Courchevel teamed up with Galeries Bartoux to bring the visual pleasures of art and sculpture to the Alps. Galeries Bartoux is a family-run collection of art galleries that originated in Honfleur, a French city famous for its painting. It has since expanded to Megève, Courchevel, Paris, New York and even Singapore. While Galeries Bartoux specialise in contemporary art, they also display a fine collection of surrealist works by Salvador Dali, as well as selections from influential figures such as Francis Bacon and Damien Hirst.

For the very first Art au Sommet, Galeries Bartoux and Courchevel featured a selection of surrealist sculptures by Salvador Dali, including his famous melting clocks. For the tenth edition of the exhibition Dali is returning. Word-renowned sculptures such as Alice in Wonderland and the Profile of Time will be available to view for free in different internal and external locations around Courchevel 1850. Le Croisette in the centre of Courchevel will also house an exhibition dedicated to ten years of L’Art au Sommet, including three giant pieces of Dali-inspired street art, and live visual performances throughout the winter.

Dali’s Horse Saddled with Time and Dalinian Dancer at le Croissette in Courchevel 1850. Photo: Courchevel Tourisme

Joining the works of Dali in the exhibition is a collection by Richard Orlinski, a pop culture-influenced sculptor and artist whose large and colourful gorillas, wolves and horses are becoming synonymous with the landscape of les Trois Vallées. Orlinski believes art should be accessible to everyone. In fact, he built his career on displaying his works to the the public for free, making his sculptures the perfect fit for L’Art au Sommet. Orlinski’s works can be viewed at the top of the the Chenus, Saulire and Vizelle gondolas, as well as at the top of the Biollay and Pralong chairlifts.

Past exhibitors include Julien Marinetti’s famous pandas and bulldogs. Photo: Courchevel Tourisme

If you’ve visited Courchevel already there’s no doubt you’ve seen this incredible collection either on the slopes or in resort. But if you’re headed out to Courchevel soon, be sure to pay all the sculptures a visit. L’Art au Sommet is an exceptional treat for skiers and art-lovers alike, and is just one of many events and spectacles that makes Courchevel stand out as one of the world’s most progressive ski resorts.

We currently have a range of luxury piste-side properties under construction in Courchevel and les Trois Vallees, from cosy one-bedroom apartments to expansive penthouses. Get in touch or view our website for more details.

Ideally situated at the edge of the Three Valleys, there’s always something new to get excited about in the winter, be it a new lift or another fun attraction. Here’s what we can look forward to this winter.

Free Aquamotion Pass with Your Lift Ticket

Staying in Courchevel Moriond this winter? This is the offer for you! If you buy a lift pass for the duration of two days or more, you’ll get one free entry to the amazing Aquamotion water park. With plenty of water-based fun, spa facilities and fitness options for adults and kids, Aquamotion is one of the best places to spend an evening. Many of our Three Valleys developments are in Courchevel Moriond, which is within easy walking distance of Aquamotion!

Ariondaz by Night XXL

Another treat for Courchevel Moriond-dwellers. Every year Courchevel hosts the Festival International d’Art Pyrotechnique, an international fireworks competition, where the best fireworks artists in the world compete against each other by putting on spectacular displays to the public. This year, Courchevel invites to a night of festive night skiing on the Ariondaz gondola in Courchevel Moriond to watch the fireworks from the slopes. Could you imagine a more perfect evening? Since last year, there’s a public vote, so you can have your say on Facebook about which fireworks you thought were the best, and the winner will receive a public choice award !

New Grangettes Gondola

Courchevel’s latest addition to the piste map is a shiny new replacement of the Grangettes gondola. Taking skiers and pedestrians from Courchevel Village at 1550m to Courchevel 1850 and providing all-important access to higher terrain, more shops and restaurants, and one of the resort’s longest sledging runs, the new Grangettes takes two minutes, thirty five seconds to reach Courchevel 1850 and transports over 2400 people per hour. That’s over twice as fast and over three times as more people than the old model. The new ten-seater Grangettes will be open from 08:35am until 7:20pm.

Automatic Chairlift Selfies

If you’ve always tried to take pictures of your ski crew on the chairlift, you’ll know how difficult it is to get everyone in shot and not drop your phone! This year, Courchevel has taken all the hassle out of chairlift selfies by adding an automatic camera to the Biollay chairlift. It takes your picture on the way up and you can view and collect it when you get to the top. Genius !

FIS Ladies Alpine Ski World Cup: Slalom Returns to Courchevel

The Ladies Alpine Ski World Cup is a major event in the ski racing circuit, but also a huge event for Courchevel. After hosting the giant slalom seven times, and slalom three times, both events are returning to Courchevel over the course of one weekend, bringing with them double the competition and double the fun. This year will be the first time Courchevel has hosted a singles slalom (last year it held a parallel slalom race) event since 2013 so we’re very excited! Courchevel also announced at the end of last winter that it’s going to be hosting the 2023 Alpine World Ski Championships, a huge honour in the ski racing world and an event that’s sure to bring lots of new visitors to the resort!

Green Initiatives in Courchevel Moriond

This is something you might not notice over the winter, but will definitely improve your views come summer! Courchevel has been busy realising its biodiversity objectives and last summer spent lots of time re-seeding the areas of Courchevel Moriond that were affected by development in the ski area. The new seeds are local to the area and have been specially developed to withstand the Alpine climate, so look out for more green spaces when the snow starts to melt!

We currently have two properties under construction in Courchevel. Canyon Lodge, a collection of three premium chalets, and Manali Lodge, a piste side development of fifteen luxury apartments with an in-house spa, pool, restaurant and ski shop. There’s so much to do in Courchevel over the summer it’s hard to narrow it down to just ten things! New and old, relaxing or adrenaline-fuelled, there’s so much going on and so much get stuck in to. After a summer holiday to Courchevel you’ll never want to go to the beach again! Here are the events and activities not to miss during your summer holiday in the mountains.

1 – FREE LIFTS !

Yes, you read that correctly! This summer, for the first time ever, the summer lift network will be completely FREE to use for everyone, even mountain bikers. This gives you access to Courchevel’s incredible summer events, miles upon miles of hiking and biking trails, and countless dazzling views. There will also be free parking and free shuttle busses to make travelling between Courchevel’s villages that much easier.

2 – Ski Jumping World Cup, 10th – 11th August

Ski jumping? In the summer? Yes! In fact, the Ski Jumping World Cup is one of the events of the season, incorporating live music, fireworks and numerous other fun goings on around the main attraction. The event is part of the FIS Summer Ski Jump Circuit and sees some of the best ski jumpers in the world battling it out against each other (and gravity!) in beautiful sunny conditions. It’s always incredible to watch and offers a great few days out so make sure you give it a look!

3 – Fly Courchevel, 10th – 15th August

If you’re a fan of gravity-defying stunts and keeping your feet off the ground, make sure you check out Fly Courchevel, back again this summer after a mega-successful first year. A celebration of all things flying, the festival involves a vast exhibition of planes and helicopters, guided flights, VR simulations, as well as the chance to learn to fly yourself! There will also be heaps of in-the-air demonstrations, from search and rescue to air acrobatics and sky painting. Courchevel even has its own airport, so it’s the perfect location to take a few flying lessons. And of course, sightseeing flights and flying introductions are available throughout the summer, offering some of the most breathtaking views in the Alps.

4 – Toboggan down the ski jump

Courchevel really knows how to use their ski jump over the summer! Brand new for this year, you can try your hand at sliding down the landing in an inflatable toboggan. Probably the most fun you can have on a ski jump if you’re not a professional ski jumper, we highly recommend you give this a try!

5 – Aquamotion

Based between Courchevel 1550 and 1650, Aquamotion is the biggest mountain aqua park in Europe, with everything from waterslides to wellness areas to keep the whole family entertained. You can get a relaxing massage, test out the indoor climbing wall, soak in the hot tubs or race down the slides. Take a Pilates class, get a facial, jump off the diving boards, the possibilities are endless. But that’s not all; Aquamotion is also home to Europe’s first indoor surf wave! There’s so much to do in one place you’ll want to go again and again, which is great because there is a huge range of pass options on offer to suit your needs.

6 – A New Col Dedicated to Cyclists

Another new addition this summer, Courchevel is building new pass dedicated exclusively to cyclists. This new trail will be based on an already-existing track used for lift maintenance and will lead up to the top of the Col de la Loze, where cyclists can enjoy awe-inspiring panoramic views. At 5.8km long with a 377m vertical climb, it’s ideal for beginner and experienced bikers alike. And the best part is that it’s free for everyone to ride without having to worry about cars or other motor vehicles!

7 – Pyro Symphonie Live, 25th July

One of Courchevel’s major cultural events of the summer, this open-air night of ballet, classical music and fireworks has something that everyone will enjoy. This year will see Tchaikovsky’s The Nutcracker brought to life on stage, with music from the forty-piece Minsk Symphonic Orchestra. To make things even better, the whole thing will be accompanied by a spectacular firework display by award-winning pyrotechnic company, Pandora Pyrotechnie. The Pyro Symphonie Live takes place in Courchevel Le Praz and is always an unforgettable way to spend a warm summer’s night.

8 – Two New Mountain Bike Trails

For summer 2018 Courchevel will be opening two brand new downhill mountain bike trails. Already renowned as an enduro paradise, these two new red runs will add a new dimension to mountain biking in Courchevel and will be great for beginner and more experienced riders alike. Measuring in with 900m and 730m of vertical descent respectively, you’ll get lots of time on your bike and get to enjoy some stunning surroundings on the way down.

9 – Red Bull 400, 21st July

Known as the steepest running race in the world, the Red Bull 400 runs from the bottom of the Courchevel ski jump to the top. While it may only be 400m long, it includes 140m of vertical and slopes of up to 36 degrees. Last year over 700 people took part, either individually or in a relay team of four. Sign up and race with some of the world’s best runners, or just kick back and watch with a cool drink, it’ll be a great experience either way!

10 – New Climbing Routes at Praméruel

Keen climbers will be happy to know that the Praméruel climbing wall now has 25 marked routes for you to play with. Perfect for everyone from complete beginners to more experienced climbers, a bit of rock climbing is a great way to spend summer days in the mountains.
